In a mango grove at Saurath sits the Sabha Gachhi, the centuries-old gathering where Maithil Brahmin families arranged marriages under the eye of the panjikars — the hereditary keepers of the Panji genealogies, who verified that bride and groom shared no forbidden ancestry. Beside it stands the Somnath Mahadev temple. Though the great assemblies have faded, Saurath remains the symbolic heart of Mithila’s unique system of recorded lineage.
