The Ram Mandir is reckoned the oldest temple in Janakpur, built around 1782 by the Gorkhali general Amar Singh Thapa in the tiered pagoda style of the Nepali hills — a striking contrast to the Mughal-influenced marble of the nearby Janaki Mandir. Set beside the sacred ponds of Dhanush Sagar and Ganga Sagar, it anchors the older, indigenous layer of Janakpur’s sacred townscape.

It comes most alive at Ram Navami and during Vivaha Panchami, when the city relives the wedding of Rama and Sita. For pilgrims walking the parikrama or visiting Sita’s birthplace, the Ram Mandir is a quieter, more ancient counterpoint to Janakpur’s famous showpiece shrine.
