Stage 1 of 4 · The birth of Rama

The birth of Rama

Ram Navami falls on Chaitra Shukla Navami (March–April), the close of Chaitra Navratri, and by tradition marks the noon birth of Rama at Ayodhya — son of King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya, born after the Putrakameshti sacrifice from whose fire came the sacred kheer the queens shared.

Devotees bathe and ready the home altar with a Ram Darbar (Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman); at midday a small Ram-lalla (infant Rama) image is bathed, dressed and laid in a cradle, which the worshippers rock to bells and conch, singing the newborn’s welcome.

विधि · The rite, step by step

  1. Devotees rise early, bathe and clean the home altar, placing a Ram Darbar image.
  2. The morning passes in worship as the festival closes Chaitra Navratri.
  3. At noon — Rama’s birth-hour — a small Ram-lalla idol is bathed (panchamrit abhishek), dressed and laid in a cradle.
  4. Worshippers rock the cradle to bells and conch, sing the birth songs, and offer aarti and prasad.
मन्त्र · mantra

श्रीराम राम रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे। सहस्रनाम तत्तुल्यं राम नाम वरानने॥

śrī rāma rāma rāmeti rame rāme manorame · sahasranāma tat-tulyaṃ rāma nāma varānane

“I delight in the lovely name ‘Rama, Rama’; to utter this Name is equal to reciting the thousand names of Vishnu.” — the Taraka (Rama) verse on the power of the Name.

Across communities Ayodhya marks the noon birth with the modern Surya Tilak (sunlight cast on Ram-lalla’s brow) and Sarayu dips; Mithila keeps it gentler and home/temple-centred, paired always with Sita. The south stages a Sita-Rama Kalyanam (wedding) instead.
