Ram Navami

Many keep a fast from dawn — the strict take only water or a single sattvik meal — while the day fills with the recitation of the Ramayana, above all Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, often as a continuous Akhand Path timed to close on Navami, with Sundarkand and bhajan-kirtan.

The deity is bathed and offered tulsi, lamp and flowers; the path closes with a havan and aarti, and the fast is broken with the prasad.

For Mithila, Ram Navami is more than an avatar’s birthday: it is the birth of their daughter’s husband. Because Rama wed Sita / Janaki, daughter of King Janaka, Mithila holds Rama as its jamai (son-in-law) and Sita as its own — so worship pairs Sita-Ram (Siya-Ram), and the very greeting of the land is “Sita-Ram.”

The day’s warmth gathers at Janaki Mandir, Janakpur and at Sitamarhi, with abhishek of the Ram-Sita images, Ramayana recitation and the Maithili Ramleela. The region’s own wedding songs — Lagan, Suhag, the farewell Samdaun — carry Sita’s marriage and vidai from Janakpur.

After the noon worship, towns mount a Shobha-Yatra — decorated floats bearing Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman, with jhankis of Ramayana scenes, bands and chanting crowds. At Janakpur the Janaki Mandir leads a great Ram-Sita parade across the border’s devotees.

In Bihar the fairs cluster at Sita-linked sites — above all Sitamarhi — and large regional melas draw the country in, with prasad and water shared along the routes and lamp-lit aarti by evening.

Rama is the seventh avatar of Vishnu and, in the Ramayana of Valmiki and Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, the Maryada Purushottam — the very measure of dharma. His day closes Chaitra Navratri with the noon birth at Ayodhya. But Mithila’s devotion runs through Sita: because Rama broke Shiva’s bow to win Janaka’s daughter, the land that raised Sita claims Rama as family, and its faith is inseparably Sita-Ram. So here the festival is sung in the key of a wedding — the bride’s house and its son-in-law — and the great gatherings are at Janakpur’s Janaki Mandir and at Sitamarhi, where Mithila celebrates not a distant king but the husband of its own daughter.
