Mahishi, west of Saharsa, is home to the Ugratara Sthan — the only Ugratara temple in Bihar and an ancient seat of tantric devotion. The village is also remembered as the home of the great philosopher Mandan Mishra, whose legendary debate with Adi Shankaracharya is one of the celebrated episodes of Indian thought.
