The Kesaria Stupa in East Champaran is among the tallest and largest Buddhist stupas in the world — a vast, terraced brick mound begun in the Mauryan age and enlarged under the Guptas. Tradition holds that the Buddha gave his alms-bowl to the Licchavis of Vaishali here as he journeyed toward his final passing.
Rediscovered and excavated by the Archaeological Survey, it is a monumental reminder of the Buddhist past that runs beneath the Mithila region’s western reaches.
