Manoj Bajpayee (b. 1969), born in the village of Belwa in the Champaran-Mithila belt, is among the most respected actors of Indian cinema. After his breakout as Bhiku Mhatre in Satya (1998), he built a career on fiercely committed performances in films such as Gangs of Wasseypur, Aligarh and the series The Family Man, winning multiple National Film Awards and the Padma Shri (2019).

His rise from a farming family in rural Bihar to the front rank of Hindi cinema makes him a point of pride across the region, and one of several figures — alongside director Imtiaz Ali and singer Udit Narayan — who carry Mithila’s imprint into the wider Indian arts.
