Jagannath Mishra (1937–2019), an economics professor turned politician, served three times as Chief Minister of Bihar and was a Union minister. Known as “Doctor Sahib”, he was instrumental in building Mithila’s educational institutions and championed the region’s interests in state politics.

A long-dominant figure of Maithil public life, he was among the senior leaders who, over the decades, kept the question of Mithila’s development and identity on the political agenda.
