Lohna is a village in the Jhanjharpur block of Madhubani district, Bihar, divided administratively into Lohna North and Lohna South panchayats. The river Lakshmana (Lakhandei) cuts the village into two halves, and Lohna Road railway station lies about 2 km away. The 2011 Census recorded a population of around 7,000 across roughly 1,670 households.
Lohna is remembered as the birthplace of Umapati Upadhyaya, the medieval Maithili poet and dramatist whose play Parijata-harana — on the quarrel of Krishna’s queens Rukmini and Satyabhama over the parijata flower — is a landmark of early Maithili theatre, and who was also a scholar of Nyaya logic. Local tradition holds that a Sanskrit college still functions on the ruins of an old seat of learning once known as the “University of Lohana.”
The village’s chief shrine is the Videshwarnath Mahadev temple, with an adjoining Parvati temple. The everyday language is Maithili, and Lohna ranks among the literary villages of the Kamala–Balan plain in eastern Mithila.
