Jitwarpur, near Madhubani town, is the most famous of the painting villages — recognised as one of Bihar’s first craft villages. Of its roughly four hundred households, hundreds paint in the vivid, colour-filled Bharni style. It was home to legends such as Sita Devi and Baua Devi, whose work carried Mithila painting from village walls to museums across the world.
