Uchhaith, near Benipatti in Madhubani, is an ancient Bhagwati (Durga) shrine on the bank of the Thumne river — a Siddhapith of tantric significance. Local tradition holds that it was here that the dull boy who would become Kalidasa, India’s greatest Sanskrit poet, was blessed by the goddess and awoke to genius.
Especially alive during Navratri, Uchhaith joins the region’s many Shakti shrines that bind Mithila to the worship of the Devi.
