Haleshwar Sthan, a little to the north-west of Sitamarhi town, is one of the temples woven into the Sita legend. Local tradition holds that King Janaka established the Shiva lingam here — Haleshwarnath — during the great sacrifice and ploughing from which Sita was born, making it a near-neighbour to her birthplace at Punaura.
A quiet but ancient shrine, it fills with devotees in Shravan and on Mahashivratri, and forms part of the cluster of Janaka-and-Sita sites — Punaura Dham, Sita Kund, Haleshwar — that make the Sitamarhi countryside a living map of the Ramayana.
