Vachaspati Mishra (c. 9th–10th century), a householder-scholar of Mithila, earned the title sarva-tantra-svatantra — “master of all systems” — for his authoritative commentaries across Nyaya, Samkhya, Yoga, Vedanta and Mimamsa. His Bhamati, a commentary on Shankara’s work, founded a whole school of Advaita Vedanta.
Few thinkers ranged so widely or so deeply; he stands among the supreme intellects that made medieval Mithila a centre of learning for all India.
