Sir Ganganath Jha (1872–1941), of Darbhanga, was one of modern India’s greatest Sanskritists — a master translator who rendered the dense texts of Mimamsa and Nyaya philosophy (the Shlokavartika, Tantravartika and Shabara’s commentary) into English. He served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Allahabad.
His scholarship carried Mithila’s ancient reputation for philosophy and logic into the modern university; the Ganganatha Jha Research Institute at Allahabad keeps his name. His son Amarnath Jha was likewise a distinguished educationist.
